Rev. Dora Gardner-Bowens

WELCOME

Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, Rev. Dora was raised in a family with multiple preachers, prophets, and pastors. Although God called Dora early in life to ministry, like many, Dora did not recognize the call and spent several years exploring questions on how to understand and apply lessons in the bible in ways that were reflective of the life and witness of Jesus Christ. During this time, she worked in the financial services industry, where she was blessed with multiple promotions and roles that allowed her to train and teach others. After visiting New Faith Baptist Church International in Matteson, Illinois, for several years, always sitting in the back of the church, in early 2014, after spending two weeks in South Africa, she answered the call to serve by officially becoming a member. In Dora’s thirst to learn more about God through the study of the Bible, she found herself serving in various capacities, including as the Co-Chair of Glorious Splendor Women’s Ministry, a teacher in the Christian Education Ministry, and as an ordained deacon.

Shortly after ordination in 2019, Dora responded to God's call to attend seminary at McCormick Theological Seminary. At McCormick, Dora discovered a passion for biblical interpretation, the theological implications of life, and the teachings of Jesus Christ related to freedom, liberation, justice, and love for oppressed communities and people. Here, Dora discovered that God’s call on anyone’s life is multifaceted but invariably means calling others to life by helping them to understand and apply the liberating message of Jesus Christ in all aspects of life as the hope in the practice of Christianity must represent itself in love, liberation, and life more abundantly for all. She served as the Co-Moderator for the Board of Deacons during this time. Dora serves as a licensed and ordained minister at New Faith Baptist Church International, is on the Board of Directors of two non-profit organizations, and is the Executive Sponsor for an African American Affinity Network at Wells Fargo, where she is also a Senior Vice President, Director of Risk and Control.

Ministry Formation and Vision
A multifaceted leader who is a servant, transformational, and adaptive, called to serve God and God’s people in the church community and beyond by spreading the liberating message and teachings of Jesus Christ through teaching, preaching, and whatever is needed to share the liberating love of Jesus Christ with the world

Genesis 1:27 NRSV

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God, male and female.

Ephesians 2:8-10 NRSV

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

John 10:10 NRSV

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly

Race is a human-created concept that was created by those who advance life-negating policies, practices, and ways of being to oppress groups of people who look different, live differently, and have not been the beneficiaries of structures of power that have traditionally been withheld from people of color and specifically those of the African diaspora.

God did not create a hierarchy of humanity, as all of humankind, male and female, were made in the image and likeness of God.

We have received the gift of grace through our faith and belief in Jesus Christ. It is neither cheap nor costly because it has been afforded to all as a gift from Jesus Christ and is not dependent on us. As such, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to do good works for the benefit of others, as God has equipped us all to do our part to make the world a better place.

Darkness comes in many forms and is to be expected. It is the job of the enemy to attempt to rob and destroy followers of Jesus Christ of our identities, life, relationships, faith, and belief in God. Amid the troubles of a fallen, dark world, there is still hope for a better life in Jesus Christ, as this is what he desires for those who believe in him.
